18th c. Spice Container

An 18th c. lidded spice container in original unfinished surface.

Constructed of maple wood. The body is turned on a pole lathe and exhibits strong lathe marks from the turning process as well as incising decoration on its body. A beautifully turned lid with relief turned decoration accompanies the body and is adorned with a prominent finial serving as the finger grab.

An unusually tall footed base is present on the base of the body elevating its form, a comfort only occassionally seen on treen of this type (for an additional example, see lot 30 of Northeast Auctions; lot 30).

Remains in excellent original condition with shrinkage producing a convex base resulting in the addition of three small applied pads for stability. Phenomenal surface qualities exuding the highest degree of patina, oxidation, and historic elements are present. A choice piece of early treenware.

New England or New York origin. Ca. 1770. 4"T
