19th c. Faux Tiger Maple Pantry Box

19th c. Faux Tiger Maple Pantry Box

A 19th c. diminutive sized pantry box in original faux grain paint decoration.

Constructed of mixed woods consisting of a maple wood body and pine wood top and base each secured using tiny wooden shaved pins. Lap joints are neatly cut at the corners and secured with a handsomly laid out arrangement of iron tacks.

Its painter was a very proficient individual, simulating figured wood maple with excellent accuracy. A cream colored foundation was laid down and worked over while wet with mustards and utensils, and when finished, a coat of varnish was applied giving the effect of finished tiger maple wood.

Remains in a superb stste of original condition, something to be admired given its age and use and retains excellent surface qualities with historic elements visually present.

New England origin. Ca. 1830. 4 3/4"W.
