19th c. Gathering Basket
A 19th c. gathering basket in original oyster white paint.
Constructed from what is more than likely black ash wood and formed in a rectangular profile, formed entirely from freehand craftsmanship. Varying widths of weavers were employed, being adjusted as the maker produced it during the forming process. A continuous handle is woven into the body and cleverly graduates in thickness at its bottom to accommodate curvature of the body.
Rim support consists of standard use of double rim ribs secured with a single continuous coil wrapping. However, the maker implemented a slight curvature to its sides, a feature not terribly common and used for an unknown reason.
Remains in a wonderfully preserved state of condition with paint color, surface and construction elements being ideal. For collector focused on the crossroads of color, elegant form and paint quality.
Northeast origin, likely New York State Native American made. Ca. 1870. 10"W x 8 1/2"T x 6 1/4"D.
