19th c. Gathering Basket
A 19th c. gathering basket in original light celery green paint with a seafoam green painted rim.
Constructed of cut and smooth shaved ash wood. The maker employed a very structured system of weavers and stanners, being both wide and stately for each, giving the weaving pattern a bold appearance and strength in its design.
Its handle is well produced, being wide and convex on the underside, accommodating comfort when gripped by human hands during working life.
Double coiled rim lashings were employed to secure its rim around double rim ribs. Its maker was conscious to the effect of ensuring both rim ribs have a convex curvature alleviating stress on the weavers when being coiled in such tight fashion.
Survives in superlative original condition with a very choice painted surface. Vibrant in its appearance and displays beautifully amongst painted treen of its kind.
Northeast in origin, possibly Pennsylvania. Ca. 1890. 11"W x 11"T.
