19th c. Match Holder
A 19th c. wooden traveling match case in unfinished surface.
Constructed entirely from pine wood, the casing is shaped in a puzzle box style design with a pivoting lid attached via a wonderfully hand cut early iron screw, formed entirely by hand with an almost humerously off centered slotted head. To open, the diagonal slide must pivot freely and the lid slid horizontally away from the wooden pin to access the interior.
Initials LC are carved on the base from original ownership.
Remains in structurally very good condition with an old age crack present, but stable. Surface and color elements remain highly desirable. Several period matches made of pine wood with phosphorus heads are included.
New England origin. Ca. 1835. 4 1/4"L.
