19th c Paint Decorated Document Box

A 19th c. paint decorated document box in original paints.

Constructed of basswood with an eastern white pine wood bottom and consists of rabbet joins secured with iron nail joining. A single small plank of thin stock is nailed to its top and is alsonsecured with iron square nails. A stamped brass plate and pull adorn its top and is original, being secured on the underside with brass nuts and leather washers.

The paint decoration is abstract and vivid creating an array of varying arched line structure and dots. Laid out on a white ground, the wet work color consists of browns and ochres and worked wet to create its arrangement.

Survives in an overall excellent state of condition with extremely minor wear, a somewhat scarce occurence given its size and use. Retains beautiful surface characteristics.

New England, possibly VT origin. Ca. 1830. 10 3/4" W x 4 3/4" D x 3 7/8" T.
