19th c. Wooden Chalice (SOLD)

19th c. Wooden Chalice (SOLD)

A superbly turned 19th c. wooden chalice in an old finish.

Constructed from a block of maple wood and profusely turned. The base is very pronounced with a stately pan shaped bowl accommodating a complex and expertly turned shaft. Its bowl exhibits a neatly spaced arrangement of scribing decoration.

The Gothic Revival period in the 19th c. saw a resurgence of reviving Gothic architecture in England and slowly migrated to other parts of the world, including the US. This chalice was turned most likely in the reaction to the dark elements of the Industrial Revolution, celebrating a desire to conform to a more traditional and simple way of life.

Remains in superb originsl condition with a fine surface.

New England. Ca. 1850-1880. 5 1/8"T.
