Early Chamberstick
An early wooden chamberstick in original unfinished surface.
Constructed from a block of soft maple wood and turned on a lathe. The body follows a robust design with a prominent base turned below an ogee shaped basin with the interior turned with centric rings.
A large diameter hole was bored to include an early candle of a more substantial size.
A small curvilinear tin handle with folded sides was applied with a series of small iron hand cut nails.
Oxidizing color and historical use created extremely desirable surface elements. A quality example of county Americana exhibiting ingenuity and form of craft with rural interpretation of everyday necessity.
Excellent original undisturbed condition. Northeast or New England origin. Ca. 1830. 6"W.
