Early Painted Canoe Cup

Early Painted Canoe Cup

An early wooden canoe cup in original red paint.

Constructed from a single body of clear maple burl wood via removal directly from the trunk of the tree, cleaned on its exterior and painted a pigmented red color. A small faceted knot was relief carved to form attachment for a leather cord. Remnants of its cording remain with an interesting blind form of attachment.

Survives in overall excellent original condition given age and intended use with most of its original leather cording long since missing.

Northeast Woodlands Indians in origin. Ca. 1850. 5"L x 2 1/4"T.
