Exceptional 19th c. Herb Box
An exquisite 19th c. herb box in original unfinished surface.
Both the body and lid are constructed of bentwood ash in an ovular form with a series of stepped and scalloped fingers in parallel. Pine wood discs accompany the lid and body and are secured with small wooden pins.
Each finger has been beveled on all edges and is finished with pointed tips. Copper tacks secure all lap joints.
Retains a very mellow, organic color in appearance. Fine condition.
Socially accepted, pantry/herb boxes with eccentric construction such as this originate to the Nantucket and eastern Massachusetts shoreline area.
