Feather Basket

Feather Basket

A 19th c. diminutive size feather basket in original green paint with a slamon painted border.

Constructed entirely of splint ash wood. The body is formed with a cornered base, lightly concaved to form feet. Worked from the base upwards, the body forms a bulbous shape accommodating its contents. Vertical stanners are alternatively folded on its interior and finished to a point, a technique as seen on Taghkanic region basketry and surrounding areas.

A double ribbed rim with chamfered edges and a lap joint adorns the top, crowned with a single coiled wrap and finished with a beautiful salmon pigmented paint.

Survives in overall excellent original condition with fine surfaces to each paint color. Lively in appearance with charming dimensions.

Northeast, likely New York in origin. Ca. 1875. 10 1/2" x 9"W.
