Purse Basket
An early 20th c. painted basket in original deep blue and red pigment.
Constructed from scraped black ash splint and woven into a tall slender profile. The weavers on the body are formed in a wide weave pattern and contain a delicate thickness. The handle being of black ash as well and draw shaved and notched, relieving the handle from being detached from the body. The rim consists of double reinforcement with the interior rib being more robust and shaped in an ovular fashion, releiving pressure of the rim coil.
A beautiful combination of red and blue has been applied, mixed with a light amount of varnish finish.
Color combination, wide splint weaver construction, size, and delicate handle accentuate this basket against the average specimen and provides a pleasing appearance. Superb oroginal condition with fine surface elements.
New England origin. Ca. 1900-1910. 8 1/4"T x 7 1/2"W x 4 1/4"D.
