Rare Baby Rattle
A wooden baby rattle in original varnished finish.
Constructed from cherrywood in a puzzle box design, a typical joinery form found on many early wooden baby rattles of the 19th c. Each piece is formed with fishtail ends and the handle containing a pierced hole likely for a small strap.
Hand written text written on the body contains "Cherrywood", "SRKnowlton" and "Oct 1 1902". Gifted to Sylvan Ruthesford Knowlton (January 16, 1903 - February 3, 1991) as a welcoming gift.
Remains in overall excellent condition with minor as expected from age and original use. Retains fabulous surfwce elements with varnish crazing and mellow color. The tiniest baby rattle I have seen.
Maine origin. Ca. 1902 or perhaps earlier. 3"L.
